Misconception

Michelle Williams, an American Actress who posed for the spring-summer issue of AnOther Magazine.
For a very long period of history, the Aboriginal community has been wronged by many countries, including America and Canada. There is a current stereotype that many people have against them, one  being called "Indian". The right terms to describe them would be Aboriginal, Indigenous or native. There is not just one group of them, but many different tribes that each exist separately from one another.

The issue being presented here is American Actress Michelle Williams being put under fire because it seemed as though both the magazine and her were mocking Aboriginals and encouraging the racism, that is already present. The feather that is in Michelle's head is one stereotype of how Aboriginal people dress. This misrepresents how women of Aboriginal descent look in the media, since a famous actress is representing them in a specific get up. Now when people think of Aboriginal women, they have a clear stereotypical image of them, since the media misrepresented them. In reality, there is no specific way to identify an Aboriginal women since they may look like an average person.

While the magazine representatives clearly stated that they had no intent to mimic or stereotype any specific type of group, do you think otherwise? If so, why? Do you think that there is a specific stereotype of how women of Aboriginal descent dress? Do you think today's society is becoming more immune to stereotypes? Is there a way to reduce stereotypes?

Let's Get Started!

Hello grade 12s!  Welcome to your new home!  As we discussed in class, you will be responsible for contributing to our class blog throughout the Media Studies unit.  Our class blog will focus on issues (mis)representations of ability, sexuality, gender and race, as they appear in media.  Just a few quick reminders:

  • You have to manage your own blog post:
    • this includes the creation of a catchy title, first post that relates to the media unit, and regular replies that spark more discussion.
    • It is expected that you will respond to the comments left on your post
    • It is also expected that you will submit the text of your post to turnitin.com
  • You also have to reply to your classmates' blog posts:
    • You must reply to a minimum of 5 different blog posts, AND offer a minimum of 10 comments overall that are meaningful and relate to the media texts/concepts. COMMENTS MADE IN RESPONSE TO THOSE LEFT ON YOUR OWN POST DO NOT COUNT TOWARDS THE 10 MINIMUM COMMENTS.
  • Your post should explicitly deal with concepts and texts we are learning about in our media unit.  Some topics to consider are: representations of females/males/homosexuals/heterosexuals in the media, the nature of dynamics between men and women (or men and men, women and women), the power distribution among men and women, and the dominant discourse regarding gender, race and sexual identity in the media.

Keep comments respectful and critical.  Everything you write on the blog is being read and evaluated by me, just like a round table discussion.  It's okay to politely disagree, but it's not okay to attack someone personally for their opinion!  Don't write anything you wouldn't want Mr. Gala to read. Have fun and good luck!
